Penguin set the brief to design a cover for the Stephen Hawking book – A brief history of time and create an advertising campaign for it.
After reading the book and learning about the contents and its context I found that the over all theme that ran through the book as the repeated mention of different types of particles that allowed us to understand how the universe was working. From this I experimented with the idea of how particles could interact with the text on the cover.
After trying to combine the particle theme with various other themes throughout the book, light and light division was the only path that led to promising design ideas. Having the particles split the text into a colour split (splitting the light waves) I could have used RGB colours to be more accurate to the light spectrum however it was a book and would be printed I saw it more fitting to split the colours using the CYMK colours.
To advertise the book cover I created I animated version that could be activated by scanning a code on a sticker that would be on a book cover or a poster. I also created a concept for an interactive installation that would only be identifiable from one point within a shopping centre. All of the elements would be hung from the ceiling of the shopping centre and their would-be paths from various points to the location where all the elements converged to create the book cover.
